Backyard Breeders
Some people breed popular dogs solely in order to make money. Some dog owners think their dogs are so wonderful that they should perpetuate them. Others want their children to see the miracle of birth. And some have accidental litters. None of these instances constitute responsible breeding. Those who sell puppies to pet shops without asking any questions, who don't do health clearances or show their dogs, and who haven't studied the good and bad points of the breed are backyard breeders. Getting a mentally and physically sound pup from these people is simply a matter of chance — with questionable odds.
Identifying a Backyard Breeder
Yorkies advertised in the classified section are almost certainly coming from one sort of backyard breeder or another. Reputable breeders generally have homes for their puppies before they're even whelped, and they don't advertise in the want ads. Another term you might see in the newspaper is “stud dog.” People seeking stud dogs are owners of female dogs that have come into heat, and they're looking to breed them with any male that's available. These people do not have the dog's best interests at heart, and they're giving no thought to the consequences for the offspring. Beware of these people.
Strategy
Once you've set eyes on a puppy, it's nearly impossible to turn away; this is precisely the thing a disreputable breeder will rely on to pass off his puppies. Therefore, one good strategy is to first interview a breeder over the phone. This way, a fuzzy little face won't sway you to make a decision that will cause you heartache in the long run. Ask the breeder your list of questions, and pay attention to what he asks you in return. If the breeder asks you an equal number of questions, and if you are satisfied with the answers to your questions, then arrange to meet the breeder's dogs.
Be extremely skeptical of any breeder who seems overly eager for you to take one of her puppies. If a breeder doesn't seem to care about where her pup is going and is only concerned that the pups be taken off her hands, this isn't the breeder for you.
