Yorkies for Show
Yorkshire terriers destined for the conformation show ring must be kept in full coat. Because this means the coat will reach the floor or beyond, if the hair is left to drag, it will get dirty and break. To avoid this, the coat is wrapped — tied up in little bundles all over the dog. This takes some practice, but you can ask your breeder to show you how to do it.
Keep in mind that although much of the judging in the show ring is focused on the dog's physical appearance, judges will probably also be touching the dog's body. A long, flowing coat is all well and good, but if it feels a bit dry to the touch, the judge will notice. Be sure that you or your groomer uses a canine conditioner when bathing the dog to keep the coat soft and shining.
Yorkies are shown with the hair on top of their head done up in a topknot. This also requires some practice. If you are planning to show but your breeder is not nearby, do your best to meet other Yorkie enthusiasts and handlers. Your veterinarian may be able to refer you to the owners of his other Yorkie patients. Any of these people will likely be able (and very willing) to help you.
If the coat grows too long, it should be trimmed to allow the Yorkie to show good movement. The full show coat is a beautiful quality, but this image can be quickly spoiled by a dog tripping over his coat in the show ring. Coat trimming for show dogs should only be done by an experienced professional.
