Backbends open and lengthen the front body and loosen the shoulder and pelvic girdles. As the chest expands, more breath comes into the body. The groins stretch, which helps maintain length in the lower back for a healthy stretch of the lower back. The back muscles contract and strengthen to support the opening of the front body. Flexibility of the spine is enhanced. When done correctly, backbends heat up and open the body, and stimulate the kidneys and adrenal glands.
