Writing the Opinion Piece
Now that you are ready to sit down and compose your commentary, there are some techniques you should keep in mind in addition to what you have learned thus far about writing nonfiction. Some of these have been discussed before but require special attention here:
Write in a clear and confident voice but do not appear arrogant or intolerant.
Acknowledge the legitimacy of those on the opposing side while discussing and refuting their positions.
You can write about a specific incident, event, or circumstance, but then you ought to draw a wider message.
Keep your audience in mind — especially those who are indecisive over the issue or in the opposition — and use information and facts as well as logic that you think will appeal to them.
Feel free to suggest specific action that your readers can take.
If you have some personal connection to the topic or personal experience you should rely on that to establish your authority.
