Books about Health, Mind, and Body
Books about health, mind, and body comprise a major genre but they also cross over into the self-help and spiritual categories. So, for example, a book titled A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose (by Eckhart Tolle) can be found in the health/mind/body section of the bookstore and also where books about spirituality and self-help are located.
The health/mind/body genre contains many subdivisions, including: mental health, death and grief, psychology and counseling, diet and weight loss, exercise and fitness, nutrition, and sex. If you want to write a book in this genre, you will find it helpful to have some degree of expertise. For example, if you want to write about nutrition or weight loss, you should be a nutritionist or in the medical field. If you want to write about grief recovery or breaking addiction, you should be a mental health professional. Of course, if your research, interviews, and possibly even your own real-life experiences are impressive, you may qualify to write such a book without a formal degree.
Sometimes your personal experience will be sufficient to provide you with the voice of authority to write a health/mind/body book. For example, if you have completed several Ironman triathlons, you will likely be considered qualified to write about training for triathlons without having a degree in physical education or sports psychology or certification as a fitness trainer.
As you'll see in Chapter 10, books in this genre are written in a style similar to self-help books. In other words, you'll adopt a friendly, conversational tone while informing and instructing and, like self-help books, they are enjoyable to write.
