Writing Exercises

If you want to write a book in the health, mind and body genre, remember that you want to write with a voice of authority yet in a personal and friendly way. Writing a book in this genre should be fun, so if you try one or both of the following exercises, do it with gusto!

EXERCISE 1

Select a physical activity you have engaged in such as jogging, biking, playing tennis, or baseball or even working out at the gym. Now whether or not you consider yourself to be an expert, imagine that you are an authority and write a few pages encouraging the reader to participate in the activity and how to do it well. Don't hesitate to draw on your own experiences.

EXERCISE 2

No doubt, there have been times when you struggled with adversity or endured difficult situations and conditions. Perhaps it was the loss of a loved one and dealing with grief, or your own depression about facing a new day. or losing a job and having to find new employment, or just raising teenagers! But it was something you overcame and you got on with your life. If what helped you over the hump came from within your own psyche and not religious faith (that's another genre), write several pages about how you accomplished this, keeping the reader in mind as someone to whom you pass on this advice.
