Online Customer Communities

The newest kid on the block in the field of customer communications is the online community. This is typically a special section of the company Web site that is reserved exclusively for customers. It often contains a lot of valuable free information and resources accessible only with a user name and password.

Online customer communities can include:

  • A forum where customers can ask questions and get answers

  • Online support or help from experts

  • Articles

  • Checklists and other stuff that can be downloaded

  • Contests

  • Newsletter archives

  • As the copywriter, you can be asked to write a wide variety of copy for an online customer community, including e-mails and letters inviting customers to participate, brochures explaining the community, and content for the site itself. As with other forms of customer communications, the basic writing objective is the same: To get customers to feel good about their decision to buy the product, so much so, in fact, that they'll buy more and tell others.
