Know When It's Time to Spread Your Wings
So, what happens when you find you're no longer able to fit your new story idea neatly into the framework of a series romance? You could set aside the story and work on something more category-friendly … or you could attempt to write a single-title romance.
When a successful category romance author crosses over into writing single-title romances, she has the potential for bringing along a loyal reader base. Promoting the new title to her fans is critical, as is writing a “bigger” book that is similar in tone to her series titles.
Making the leap into single-title romances isn't without its pitfalls, however, since success in one format doesn't necessarily guarantee success in another. For this reason, many category romance authors will only venture into single-title territory if they can maintain a presence in the series romance market, thereby maximizing their exposure to readers and minimizing the risks. (For more information on writing a single-title romance, refer to Chapter 5.)
