Reassess Your Characters

Have you created characters your readers will fall in love with? Are their flaws forgivable and the motivations behind those flaws clearly stated on the written page? Because writers' characters are sometimes like their children, it's easy for writers to love their story people in spite of their downfalls.

If you find your heroes or your heroines behaving inappropriately, make sure you have balanced their good qualities with their flaws and that you have written the motivation behind their less-than-favorable qualities.

In many cases, it isn't so much the author's blind love that is the problem, but a writer's inability to get the character's internal makeup on the page. In other words, an author knows why his characters behave the way they do, but he hasn't spelled that out for the reader. So, in that final polish, make sure your reader has insight into what is really making your characters tick.
