How to Keep the Reader Reading

So, how do you keep the reader reading your romance novel from first page to last? By writing a book that she can't put down, of course. As for how to accomplish that, the best way is to follow the same “formula” you used in your first scene and first chapter, with a few modifications, of course.

Make sure the scenes and chapters that follow …

  • Further the plot

  • Have conflict

  • Develop your main characters

  • Engage the reader's emotions

  • Contain a minimum of introspection

  • Make the reader wonder what will happen next

Following these guidelines will ensure that your romance novel is the best that it can be. (For more information on how to keep the reader's interest from waning, refer to Chapter 16.)
