It can be asserted with confidence that no one knows exactly how many religions there are, although the best estimate is about 4,200. One religion is certainly not superior to another, and the longing for religion seems built into human nature. The words of Voltaire (1694–1778) still ring true: “If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.”
