Islam is the religion of Muslims, revealed through Muhammad, the prophet of Allah. In effect, Muhammad, as God's messenger, was to the origins of Islam what Moses was to Judaism. An Arabic term meaning “submission to God,” Islam originated in Arabia in the seventh century. While the distribution of Islam throughout the world generally covers Africa, the Middle East, and sections of Asia and Europe, it is becoming a growing religious factor in the United States as well. More than 6 million Muslims reside in the United States.
