Aquariums

Most people think that aquariums are only located in Florida or on the West Coast. While most people know that Sea World has locations in Florida and California, they get a puzzled look on their faces when they learn that Sea World also has an aquarium in Texas. (The company recently sold the one it had in Ohio.) There are aquariums in almost every state in the country — from SeaLife Center in Alaska to Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey.

Animal trainers, veterinarians, and animal caretakers who work at aquariums often put in long hours and tend to work when visitors are present. While clerical workers at aquariums may work from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday, there is a definite possibility for animal trainers, veterinarians, and animal caretakers to work overtime and on holidays. In other words, you work when the aquarium is open, and you also can be on call in the middle of the night if there is an emergency.

Essential

Many aquariums have indoor exhibits. Even so, if you work as a marine biologist, educator, animal trainer, or part of the veterinary staff, you will have to spend time swimming with the fish. This can be a very hands-on job, so expect to get wet. Professionals who go into this line of work love the water as much as the sea creatures they encounter do.

Finding a job at an aquarium takes initiative. You must be willing to relocate, even though jobs do exist in almost every state. More good news is that even some zoos have aquariums or exhibits that feature aquatic animals. For instance, the Central Park Zoo in New York City has a wonderful penguin exhibit.

Opportunities do exist for marine biologists, scientists, educators, oceanographers, veterinarians, and others who wish to work at an aquarium. As long as you have the degree, experience (even as an intern), and the willingness to work with sea animals, you can work almost anywhere in the country.
