Set Career Goals

From the time you knew you wanted to work with animals, you had goals. Some of your first goals were finishing and excelling in school. Your next goal, after graduation, was to obtain an entry-level job and then move on to your dream job. That too has been accomplished. Now that you are working in your ideal job, you should establish new goals. Even if your job is pure perfection, it is good to challenge yourself with new goals.

It is important to dream big. Most career counselors tell students and people who are changing jobs to have realistic goals. While there is a lot of truth to that, it is a good idea to introduce outrageous goals every once in a while. A goal that others see as impractical can have a positive effect. It's not about being practical. It's about pushing yourself beyond your limitations. You are learning along the way. If you don't try, you will always wonder. It's self-affirming to challenge yourself. Goals provide direction in work and in life. They also teach us a bit about ourselves. Each step toward your goal is an accomplishment, and you should reward yourself. Think of each step as an achievement bringing you closer to your final goal.

The first step in setting goals is to define them. Write down your goals and the steps you need to take along the way to make your goals happen. When you write down your goals, you have a clear guide to follow. If you only keep these goals in your head, you will constantly change them. A good written plan helps identify the course of action that you will need to take to make your goals a reality. Be as clear and specific as possible. Keep a timeline, and write down dates for accomplishing some of these goals.

Along the way, you may face some setbacks. Don't let them discourage you. Keep on track and stay focused. When things go awry, figure out why and implement new strategies to get you back on track. You might want to partner with someone to help you with your goals. For example, if you want to expand your veterinary clinic or retail pet shop, you might want to find a business partner.

It's a good idea to involve others to help you with your goals. It's okay to ask for assistance and support from friends, family, and business colleagues — especially if they have experience in your field. Just realize that everyone needs help along the way and that many people are eager to share their expertise.

Be positive when planning and working toward your goals. Draw on your past achievements, and carefully regard each step along the way. You might find that you are being pulled in one direction toward another opportunity. Be open to all options, and know that each step brings you closer to achieving success.
