Job Security

Animal service workers are among the most highly skilled workers in the country. They have specialized training — whether it is running a pet shop or grooming business, or working as a zoologist. Dog trainers and judges at dog and cat shows also are experts in their fields. Being an expert often equals job security.

Most animal care workers tend to hold on to their jobs. Zoo directors often remain in their jobs until they retire. Veterinarians can keep their private practices running for the full span of their careers. The demand for highly skilled animal service workers means that there are plenty of job opportunities and that once a job is attained, you can be in it for the long haul.

That suits many animal care workers well, because rather than being routine, every day brings new challenges. “It definitely is not a boring job,” says Dr. Mary Burch, of the American Kennel Club. “I work with a wide range of professionals and see a lot of different types of dogs. It's quite exciting.”

As long as people dote on their animals, opportunities for caring for animals will always exist. Susan Briggs, owner of doggie daycare center Urban Tails in Houston, explains. “People who bring their pets to Urban Tails love their animals. They lead busy lives and want to make sure that we are taking good care of their pets when they are at work or on vacation. I have seen this business grow because of that concern on the part of animal owners.” She adds, “There are other doggie daycare centers and pet hotels opening up in nearby cities and across the country. The opportunities are here, and so is the security.”

The self-employed, private, government, nonprofit, and college and university sectors all are seeing growth and strong job security for people who work with animals.
