Zoos and wildlife parks have undergone major renovations. The steel bars and small concrete cages have almost disappeared. Today, major zoos try to re-create the best of Mother Nature. For example, at the Bronx Zoo in New York, the African Plains area offers lions a safe place to roam; snow leopards can be spotted in the Himalayan Highlands habitat; and western lowland gorillas have made a home at the zoo's Congo Gorilla Forest. Wildlife centers also have designed their parks with the animals in mind. At Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, the 360-acre Wild Safari is home to more than a thousand animals.
