Wine has been associated with good health for thousands of years. Clay tablets dating back to 2100 BC show wine being used as medicine. In 450 BC Hippocrates recommended wine to relieve fevers, disinfect wounds, and supplement nutrition. In 1680 the doctor for Louis XIV urged the king to regularly drink Burgundy to maintain his health. In the nineteenth century, European wine drinkers escaped the ravages of cholera, scientists believe, because the wine wiped out the bacteria causing the disease. Today, researchers are trying to find out just how wine interacts with the human body.
