Historically, no wines have been both loved and maligned more than dessert wines and fortified wines. In one culture, they are treasured by kings and queens; in others, they are the stuff of skid row. Some were discovered through accidents of nature, others through human oversight. In any case, many of them deserve a place among the world's greatest wines.
