Online Resources

  • American Bar Association (ABA): This is the official site of the ABA, which provides a lawyer locator. Check the Public Resources section, then "Get Legal Help."

  • State Bar Association Directory: This site will guide you to the state bar association that regulates lawyers in your state. Each bar association site has different features, though most will guide you to a lawyer referral service regulated by the bar association.

  • Aging With Dignity: This site includes the Five Wishes program and guidance for medical directives or living wills.

  • Funeral Costs: On this site you can find a listing of funeral expenses and average costs, as well as choices for funerals or services.

  • The Internal Revenue Service (IRS): The IRS website includes federal income, gift, and estate tax forms and publications that you can read and/or download. Most commonly used for income tax is Publication 17. See Publications 526 for Charitable Contributions, 559 for Survivors, Executors and Administrators, 590 for details about Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), and 950 for an Introduction to Estate and Gift Taxes.

  • Legacy Writer: This is an Internet site that allows you to complete an easy-to-understand questionnaire that creates a will according to your answers. The cost for a last will and testament is $19.95. The site also provides a complete estate planning package for $39.95.

  • OrganDonor.gov: This site provides information on organ donations and how to register in your state. It also has a printable card you can download and complete to keep in your wallet or with your estate plans.

  • Saving For College: This site describes 529 plans for education, how to calculate college costs, and how to select a plan.

  • College Answer Paying For College: This site compares 529 plans in each state and allows you to examine possibilities within your own state.
