Baked Applesauce

This is simple comfort food at its best, and it all begins with store-bought applesauce. Serve this from autumn to spring with the game of your choice. Kids will love it, too.

INGREDIENTS | SERVES 6 to 8

  • 4 cups applesauce
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • ¼–½ cup miniature marshmallows
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly butter a shallow 1-quart baking dish.

  2. Combine room-temperature applesauce with brown sugar and cinnamon. Pour into prepared baking dish.

  3. Sprinkle the marshmallows in the center of the applesauce.

  4. Bake for about 20 to 30 minutes, until warmed through and marshmallows melt and begin to brown.

Homemade Applesauce

Great homemade applesauce is easy to make. Peel, core, and slice 6 tart apples like Jonathan, Braeburn, or Granny Smith. Place apple pieces in a stainless steel pot. Add 2 tablespoons water and cover. Simmer over low heat for about 1 hour. Add from ½ to 1 cup sugar to taste. Add 1 to 3 teaspoons cinnamon, if you like. Continue to cook until apples become mushy. Stir several times during the cooking process. Mash with a potato masher or run through a food mill. Keep in a covered container or glass jar(s) in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks.
