Magickal Herbcraft

Herbs play an important role in the green witch's magick. Although the easiest herbs to come by — especially for city dwellers — are familiar kitchen spices, witches may utilize any part of a plant that is appropriate to their intentions. Here are some ways that Wiccans and witches use herbs and flowers for both magickal and mundane purposes.

  • Air fresheners and potpourris

  • Altar decorations

  • Candles

  • Creams and lotions

  • Dream pillows

  • Headpieces

  • Incense

  • Oils

  • Ritual foods and beverages

  • Sachets

  • Wreaths

Recite chants, incantations, or prayers over the item while you are making it. This directs positive energy into it, filling the substance with magickal intention, and keeps your mind focused on your goal.

For protection and safety — especially if you're doing healing magick — as well as to enhance its effectiveness, visualize the item being imbued with the white-blue light of Spirit. It's also a good idea to bless each ingredient before you use it.

Many good books provide recipes for green magick workings and kitchen witchery. In time you'll develop an intuitive understanding of the mystical energies in various herbs. As you become familiar with concocting herbal spells and products, you may want to create your own specialties. Magickally prepared items, such as candles and massage oils, make wonderful and very personal gifts, too.
