Tapping Your Own Elemental Power
Every witch has one element to which she most strongly responds; this is her power element. In addition, each witch has a personality element. Your astrological chart will reveal your dominant elements. Your sun sign is important, but you'll want to pay attention to the positions of the moon and planets, as well as your ascendant. Often your power element is the one in which your natal moon is positioned, whereas your personality element corresponds to your sun sign.

Think of yourself as a battery that is charged by the cosmos. By tuning into your dominant elements and connecting to the elemental forces in the universe, you can revitalize yourself and strengthen your magickal abilities.
How do you determine your power element? By paying attention. Go to places where you can experience each element intimately. Stand in a strong wind, sit by an ocean or waterfall, watch a blazing fire, or walk into a cave or forest. Which location makes you feel the most alive, nurtured, and content? Pay attention to your senses — do they feel more keen or activated in one place than another?
Once you determine which element energizes you, you can find ways to plug into that source of renewable energy any time you need a boost. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Earth: Work in the garden. Sit on the ground while holding brown or black gemstones in your hand. Take long walks in the woods. Keep potted plants in your home and workplace. Eat lots of root vegetables: potatoes, carrots, turnips, beets.
Air: Open the windows. Practice yogic breathing exercises. Go to a windy location and let the breeze embrace you. Watch birds. If you work in a building where you can't open the windows, put an electric fan near your work station.
Fire: Get out in the sunshine. Light candles. Build a fire. Sit next to a heater. Dance to lively music, around a ritual fire if possible. Drink hot beverages and eat spicy foods.
Water: Go swimming. Sit beside a body of water. Take long baths or showers. Play in the rain. Drink lots of spring water.
You can also connect with these elements through meditation. Envision yourself in a setting that corresponds to your power element. Or visualize yourself surrounded by the element in its most fundamental state. As you breathe, imagine you are inhaling that nourishing force into your body where it invigorates you on all levels.
Your Personality Element
Your personality element may or may not be the same as your power element. To discern your personality element, ask yourself the following questions:
What are your likes and dislikes?
How do people describe you?
What hobbies (or art forms) interest you most?
What's your temperament?
Do any themes appear in your answers? Next, look over the following descriptions of elemental personalities for more insight:
Earth People
You like stability and creature comforts. Usually, you carefully plan out everything and take your time making decisions. People consider you to be dependable, steady, and practical. Your favorite color may be black, brown, or forest green. You enjoy plants and nature. Your hobbies might include gardening, ceramics, woodworking, or other handicrafts.
Air People
The world of ideas appeals most to you and you love learning new things. You engage in long conversations with friends and probably have a large circle of acquaintances. People often describe you as outgoing, independent, and maybe a bit ditsy. Your favorite color may be yellow, pale blue, or white. Reading and/or writing are among your hobbies, and perhaps hang-gliding or flying kites.
Fire People
Passionate and energetic, you enjoy adventure and taking risks. You have no patience with wishy-washy sorts or couch potatoes. Always on the go, you have trouble sitting still. People might describe you as hot-headed or impulsive. Your favorite colors are red and orange. You probably enjoy sports and your hobbies might include dancing, horseback riding, or traveling.
Water People
Your gentle temperament leads you to go with the proverbial flow. Easily influenced by others, your emotions are sensitive and deep. You possess keen intuition and perhaps artistic or musical talent. A natural caretaker, you nurture others and may be a healer. People describe you as shy, reclusive, or moody, and you need quiet time alone. Your favorite color is purple or blue, and your hobbies might include painting, music, fishing, or swimming.
Once you understand your elements, you can focus on the type of magick that suits you best. For instance, air people may have great success with chanting and affirmations. Fire people often gravitate toward candle spells. People with earth personalities tend to be good at herbal magick. Water people can concoct wonderful potions and witches' brews.
If your power element and personality element are different, try to tap both in your magick spells and rituals. For example, a witch whose power element is earth and personality element is air could be an avid communicator who leads group rituals for abundance or healing. Play to your strengths.
