Fabric and Materials

Do you consider yourself a “touchy-feely” person? You can use your sense of touch to enhance your magick. Remember, the more you engage your senses and your imagination, the more power you put behind a spell. Witches often wear special clothing when performing rituals: rich velvet or tapestry robes, long flowing dresses, or Renaissance garb, for example. Dressing for the occasion separates the event from everyday activities and sets the tone for magickal workings, just as dressing up in evening clothes makes you feel different than wearing jeans or a business suit. Notice how you feel when you don various types of clothing and the sensations you experience when different fabrics touch your skin.

Some witches practice skyclad (naked), others prefer to wear robes, masks, and various accouterments. Some covens use special markings or colors to indicate different things, such as the season, the purpose of the ritual, or a person's level of achievement in that group.

In some rituals, members of the group may be chosen to represent the guardians of the four directions or to invoke these guardians. These individuals might wear clothing in the colors associated with the quarters. The person who marks the south dons red garb, the person at the north dresses in green, the person in the west wears blue, and the person at the east wears yellow.

Costumes and masks play roles in sympathetic magick, too, whereby a person “becomes” what the costume represents in the sacred space. Consider the medicine man who puts on the mask of an honored tribal spirit before going to a healing ritual. Participants no longer see a friend or family member; they see the face of a spirit. Thus, robes and costumes provide an extrasensory dimension in ritual practice.

Astrological Correspondences

Just as colors are connected with the four elements and the astrological signs, so are fabrics. Some of the correspondences in the following list are obvious; leather, for instance, relates to Taurus, the bull. Others are based on the similarities between the characteristics of the material and those of the sign. Virgo is a practical, unassuming sign and those qualities also pertain to canvas cloth.

When celebrating a ritual, you might choose to wear fabrics associated with the prevailing zodiac energies in order to attune yourself to the time. Yule, for instance, is the perfect time to don a mohair cape. Or dress in materials that either emphasize or complement your own astrological attributes.

Magickal Décor, and More

Take a few moments to notice the fabrics that occupy your sacred space. Are they the same as those in your home and workspace? Or are they specially chosen to convey a sense of magick and mysticism? The ambiance you create will have a profound impact on your mental state when you are performing spells and rituals.

Your altar cloth, in particular, should be of a material and color(s) that evoke feelings of reverence, peace, power, joy, mystery, and/or other emotions you associate with your magickal life. Perhaps you'll want to change it periodically, to reflect the changing seasons, your magickal intentions, or developments in your spiritual path. Pay attention to the rug or floor underfoot, which provides your sense of stability and foundation. You might also want to include an upholstered chair or cushion for meditation; if so, make sure its fabric inspires comfort and serenity. If you serve food or drink in your sacred space, you might enjoy using special table linens for ritual meals.

Witches also consider the materials from which they fashion mojo bags. You could make a love talisman from red silk, a prosperity talisman from green velvet, or a protection amulet from black hemp. You can combine different materials and colors to represent the unique nature of your intentions. For example, add permanence to the green velvet prosperity talisman by tying it with a leather cord. The more you can involve your imagination and your senses in the process, the more successful your magick will be.

<a
