Destination Logistics

Be ready to do a lot of research or consult a travel agent on traveling in your chosen area. Don't give up until you're happy with your choice.

Even if you choose a destination resort that does most of the wedding planning for you, you still have to make decisions about:

  • Flowers

  • Music

  • Photography

  • Ceremony readings and vows

  • Reception food and drink

  • Ceremony and reception music

  • Wedding cake

  • Wedding attire

Don't be overwhelmed by this list! Even if you have never been to the destination, there are ways to find reputable vendors to work with.

Ask the Destination Site for Help

It's possible to save money, time, and trouble by asking managers of your chosen site whether a wedding or event consultant is available to help you arrange a wedding. Most of the time there is.

Be sure to ask whether there is any fee for such services. Most destinations are eager for your business and usually provide wedding services at no extra charge.

Questions About the Destination

The best part of a destination wedding is using the location's natural elements — the beautiful natural setting of Hawaii, for instance, inspires a special mood for a wedding ceremony. Perhaps that is why it was one of the first destination wedding/honeymoon locations, and to this day remains a premier site. What is it about your potential destination site that inspires you to say your vows there?

Alert

There are dozens of Web sites about destination weddings on the Internet. You can find out about the most popular wedding destinations, check out some bargains, and even chat online with other couples who have chosen to have a destination wedding and are willing to share their experiences.

10 important considerations if planning a destination wedding:

  1. Can your family and wedding party travel to the site?

  2. Who will pay for their airfare and accommodations?

  3. What types of arrangements are available for onsite weddings?

  4. Can you get an upgrade on your accommodations by having your wedding at the same site?

  5. How many rooms can the site provide for your guests?

  6. Will you be able to secure a special rate for accommodations? (Check with the airlines, too.)

  7. When do you have to make a deposit and how much must it be?

  8. Ask to see sample menus and photos of actual weddings that have taken place at the destination.

  9. Are there any special weather considerations?

  10. Is there a one-year anniversary return special for having a wedding there?
