Going Green
“Going green” is a trend that is turning into a wedding staple. As everyone is becoming more aware of the impact of wastefulness on the planet and what it means for the future, brides are “showing their colors” by looking to avenues that promote recycling, repurposing, and reducing the economic and ecological footprint their wedding leaves behind.
The trend is growing; however, it still may be difficult to find vendors in all areas that are green. If you cannot find a green vendor, offer suggestions to the available vendors. For example, ask them to use locally grown and produced products and supplies. Of course, going green may not save you green, but it will help save the planet.
The Path to Green
Here are some ideas on making your wedding green. Work with your vendors and do a little footwork yourself to implement some of these concepts.
GOING GREEN CHECKLIST
Work with a caterer or venue that promotes recycling.
Ask your caterer and guests to recycle.
Use locally grown organic produce and products.
Use locally grown organic florals or, better yet, incorporate potted plants that can later be planted.
Try paper-free invitations (use ones made from hemp or bamboo) or use 100 percent Post-Consumer Waste Recycled Paper and nontoxic inks.
Serve organic wines.
Have your favors reflect a green theme such as reusable shopping bags, stainless steel water bottles, tree seedlings, seeds, or organic fruits and nuts.
For typically disposable items such as table numbers and escort/ place cards, use organic or reusable products such as leaves, lemons, rocks, or items that are made from recycled paper.
