The Party Begins … The Party Continues
In addition to the excitement of the wedding itself, there are a few other wedding activities you may want to plan for your guests. These extra events are completely optional, and it is not your responsibility to plan out each minute of the guest's stay. However, if possible, the addition of parties before and after the wedding will surely be enjoyed and welcomed by the guests.
Before the Wedding
Many brides would like to invite the out-of-town guests and other special people to the rehearsal dinner, but space and budgetary limitations often preclude this option. To welcome those who have traveled so far (and some locals, too), try planning an informal gathering.
Ask a close friend or relative if they would be willing to host an informal get-acquainted cocktail party at their home, or plan to have everyone meet at the hotel, restaurant, or bar for a drink after the rehearsal dinner. Of course, plan this carefully because you should attend any events you invite guests to, at least for a while.
After the Wedding
Just because the reception is over, doesn't mean the parties are. With couples spending so much time carefully planning their weddings, and guests coming in from all over the country and even the world, brides and grooms have found new and fun ways to continue their wedding celebration as long as possible.
Post wedding parties include:
Brunches: Day-after wedding brunches have become common and are customary in certain regions, but they are not mandatory. The agenda for the brunch is simple — eat, relax, and enjoy! The menu doesn't have to be extravagant either; a Continental breakfast with juices, coffee, and pastries will suffice. Extend this invitation to the out-of-town guests, and you may include locals as well.
Gift openings: These gatherings may be “expected” in certain areas of the country. The newly married couple and their families gather together the day after the wedding and open their wedding gifts. The opening is usually at the bride's parent's home, and guests are welcome to attend. Light refreshment should be provided.
