In novels, many writers employ a literary device called foreshadowing in which they offer a hint of what is to come later in the book. The early Church Fathers viewed the Old Testament in a similar way. According to their thinking, there were both Christ types and Mary types in the Old Testament that foreshadowed the appearance of Christ and Mary in the New Testament. This chapter will explore ways in which the early Church Fathers saw Mary in the Old Testament.
