Parallels Between Fatima and Medjugorje

Some theologians have seen parallels between the apparitions at Fatima and the apparitions at Medjugorje. Both series of apparitions contained warnings and secrets. Some have even said that the apparitions at Medjugorje are a continuation and fulfillment of the apparitions that began in Fatima.

Like Fatima, in Medjugorje there have been multiple reports of “miracles of the sun” in which the sun has become a spinning disk during the visions. Many people have reported miraculous healings, and hundreds of thousands (some estimate millions) of people have converted to Christianity as a result of these apparitions. Upon returning home from Medjugorje, some pilgrims have reported that metal beads on their rosaries turned to gold.

Some have also made a connection between the apparitions at Medjugorje and Fatima because of issues related to Communism. In Fatima, many believe that the rise, spread, and fall of Communism was predicted. In Medjugorje, some have suggested the widespread effects of the apparitions in Bosnia-Herzegovenia, a Communist country, seemed to indicate the continual demise of Communism around the world.

discussion question

How common are reports of sightings of the Virgin Mary?

During the past twenty years, there have been more than 2,000 claims of Mary sightings. Of these, only 65 have won the status of “accredited apparitions” by the Roman Catholic Church.

Some believe that Medjugorje was supernaturally protected during the war in Yugoslavia. Medjugorje was located in the center of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovinia, where some of the most intense battles raged. Though great bloodshed broke out in the surrounding area, the village of Medjugorje remained virtually unharmed. Strangely, only one air raid was attempted on Medjugorje, and the few bombs that were dropped did little damage.

On November 9, 1992, The Wall Street Journal reported, “The war has enhanced Medjugorje's fame as an oasis of peace and mystery.” The same article quoted Dragan Kozina, the town's mayor, as saying, “You have to believe that either we are very lucky, or that someone is protecting us.”
