Besides the books that eventually became collated into the New Testament, many other books were written around and after the time of the apostles. While these books never achieved the full status as canonical (or universally accepted) books of the Bible, some of them came to have a wide influence and were much loved by Christians, while others were considered dangerous and shunned. This chapter will explore the stories of Mary found primarily in one apocryphal book, the Protoevangelium of James.
