Mary occupies a unique place in popular culture. She is an object of loyal devotion and of occasional artistic deprecation. In some cases, these strange manifestations seem to be largely harmless, while in others the Virgin Mary is exploited for commercial use in a way that is offensive to believers. This chapter dives into the more curious (and in some cases, disconcerting) manifestations of the Virgin Mary in popular culture, as well as the attempts of many of the faithful to protect her image when they feel it has been tainted.
