Although the Virgin Mary was never considered a goddess in the Eastern or Western Churches, her image reflects many of the goddesses from ancient religions. If the Virgin Mary seems similar to these goddesses, it is because within Christianity there are elements borrowed from ancient religions. This chapter will explore the similarities, as well as the differences, between the Virgin Mary and a variety of goddesses from ancient religions.
