During the first few centuries after the death of Christ, there were sometimes fierce debates over what constituted legitimate Christian teaching. In order to bring unity and clarity to the churches, the famed Roman emperor, Constantine the Great, called the first church council, which met in Nicea in 325. This chapter will offer a basic framework of some the earliest church councils and the ways these councils helped to form an early understanding of Mary's place within Christianity.
