Walsingham, England, 1061

Like the apparition in Rome, in Walsingham, England, the Virgin Mary appeared to a wealthy person — in this case, it was a widow named Lady Richeldis de Faverches, who had been praying about how to best use her resources. One night that year, the Virgin Mary came to her with a request: build a mini-replica of the house from Nazareth, where the Annunciation occurred. The Virgin Mary wanted the replica to serve as a reminder to the people that she was available to help them.

According to accounts of these apparitions, the Virgin Mary is often quite detailed in her requests, not leaving much to the imagination of the visionary. In Walsingham, she not only asked Lady Richeldis de Faverches to create the replica, but she also transported the Lady through space and time to her original house in Nazareth so that she could get the measurements exactly correct.

A year after the visitation, the house was completed. A chapel called the Slipper Chapel was also built about a mile away from the house so that pilgrims could leave their shoes behind and travel the last mile without them.

Walsingham became an extremely popular pilgrimage spot during the Middle Ages but was destroyed during the Reformation. Only the Slipper Chapel survived the pillaging.

Walsingham, which was once one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Europe, has attracted the attentions of prominent people. During construction, Edward the Confessor offered the entire country of England to the Virgin Mary as a dowry. After the replica was completed, all of the English kings up to Henry VIII made pilgrimages there.

Many centuries later, when English Catholics were once again permitted to practice their faith in England, the shrine was rededicated to Mary. Presently, a remnant of the original Slipper Chapel shares space with an Anglican shrine for Our Lady of Walsingham. Walsingham is now considered one of Europe's great ecumenical sites.
