How Common Is the Infection?
Due to the highly contagious nature of this virus, chickenpox is extremely common. About 4 million children get chickenpox each year in the United States. More than 90 percent of adults have had the infection, and the most common age to get chickenpox is between the ages of four to ten in the United States. Chickenpox is relatively uncommon in babies.
Question
How do you know for sure whether you and your child have had chickenpox already? There is a reliable blood test that checks for the presence of antibody against chickenpox in the body to confirm or refute a previous exposure to chickenpox. If the blood test confirms the presence of antibody against chickenpox in your child, your child does not need to get the chickenpox vaccine.
