Succession and Election

When John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, Johnson took over as president. He was actually given the oath of office on Air Force One. He served out the rest of Kennedy's term in office before running for election in his own right in 1964. At that time, Hubert Humphrey was selected as his vice president. Johnson was opposed by Barry Goldwater. Johnson was able to make Goldwater look like an extreme conservative while he painted himself as a moderate. Throughout the campaign, Johnson refused to debate Goldwater. In the end, America went “all the way with LBJ” as he won with a huge majority — 61 percent of the popular vote and 486 of the electoral votes.
