First Lady: Claudia Alta Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson

Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Taylor was born on December 22, 1912, the daughter of T. J. Taylor and Minnie Patillo-Taylor. Lady Bird — as she was called from her youth — was a savvy businesswoman.

PRESIDENTIAL TRIVIA

Lyndon Johnson met Lady Bird at the home of a mutual friend in 1934. Johnson asked her to meet him for breakfast the next morning. While they were eating, he asked her to marry him. She took some time to consider his proposal before agreeing to be wed. They were married on November 17, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas.

As first lady, Lady Bird worked to improve the way America looked through what was known as the beautification program. Part of her accomplishment included supporting the Highway Beautification Act, which limited billboards and increased funding for roadside landscaping. Together, the Johnsons had two daughters: Lynda Bird and Luci Baines. All four members of the Johnson family had the same initials, LBJ. Both of Johnson's daughters got married while he was president. Lynda's ceremony was in the White House, while Luci had her reception there.
