First Lady: Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams

John Quincy Adams's wife was the only foreign-born first lady America has had. She was the daughter of an American merchant and an Englishwoman and grew up in London and France. She was often sick with migraine headaches and also suffered from depression. Their marriage was not marked by much happiness. Louisa herself felt that the Adams men were cold and often unapproachable. Louisa and John had three sons: George Washington, John, and Charles Francis. Their youngest, Charles, followed in his father's footsteps and became an influential diplomat. Louisa Adams died on May 15, 1852.
