Successful Peanut Farmer
Carter went home to Plains, Georgia, and entered into the family business as a peanut farmer. His efforts on the family farm led to expansion of the business and eventually made him a very wealthy man. At this point, he turned his eye toward politics.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS…
Jimmy Carter was always a huge proponent of equal opportunities for everyone. During Jimmy Carter's inaugural address as governor of the state of Georgia, he said: “The test of a government is not how popular it is with the powerful and privileged few, but how honestly and fairly it deals with the many who must depend on it.”
He ran and won a seat in the Georgia State Senate where he served from 1963 to 1967. His success as a politician led him to the governor's mansion in 1971, where he was responsible for massively restructuring Georgia's bureaucracy.
