Early Career

After graduating from Yale University, Bush served in the Texas Air National Guard. He asked to be discharged six months early from his six-year tour of duty to go to Harvard Business School.

SCANDALS & GOSSIP

Bush has been criticized, especially during the 2004 campaign, for his service in the Texas Air National Guard. Critics charge that he received special consideration to get into the guard, thereby avoiding the draft during the Vietnam War. Further, there are some questions concerning his irregular attendance without any repercussions.

After getting his MBA, he moved back to Texas and began working in the oil industry there. He helped his father campaign for the presidency in 1988. Then, in 1989, he purchased part of the Texas Rangers baseball team and served as managing general partner.

From 1995 until 2000, Bush served as the governor of Texas. As governor he was known for education reform and implementing a huge statewide tax cut. He also gave government support to faith-based organizations that provided social programs throughout the state.
