Becoming the President

Bush gained the nomination in 1988 to run for president. Notably, in Bush's acceptance speech at the Republican Nominating Convention, he made a statement that would come back to haunt him when he became president:“Read my lips: no new taxes.” Bush chose Dan Quayle to run as vice president. He was opposed by Democrat Michael Dukakis. The campaign was extremely negative and centered on personal attacks instead of plans for the future. In the end, Bush won with 54 percent of the popular vote and 426 out of 537 electoral votes.
