Bid for the Presidency
In 1888, Harrison received the Republican nomination for president with Levi Morton as his running mate. His opponent was incumbent President Grover Cleveland. After a very close campaign, Cleveland actually won the popular vote by more than 100,000 votes. However, he failed to carry his home state of New York, which cost him that state's electoral vote and the election. Harrison won with 58 percent of the electoral vote.
