In The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith declared that everyone would benefit equally as an economy expanded if only the invisible hand of the marketplace was allowed to operate. Forty years later, David Ricardo looked at an economy that was growing under the influence of the Industrial Revolution but was still ruled by protectionism. Not only were the benefits of growth unequally distributed, but those who received the greatest share did the least to deserve their reward.
