Declaration of Faith

To emphasize that Islam is fundamentally based on a strong monotheistic foundation, the first formal pillar of practice is to declare one's faith in God. The shahaada, or declaration of faith, is repeated daily throughout a Muslim's life. A Muslim declares his or her faith by saying, “La ilaha illa Allah wa Muhammad arrasulullah” (“There is no god worthy to be worshiped except Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”).

The declaration of faith is more than just a statement; it must be shown with one's actions. The Qur'an says: “Know, therefore, that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for your faults, and for the men and women who believe. For Allah knows how you move about and how you dwell in your homes” (Qur'an 47:19).

This declaration of faith succinctly summarizes the Islamic belief in the Oneness of God. The statement also affirms the belief in God's prophets, with Muhammad as the final messenger. The shahaada is repeated throughout the day, in formal prayers and in informal supplications. All that is necessary for a person to convert to the faith of Islam is to believe in and make this declaration.
