Before the coming of Islam, the Arabian Peninsula was steeped in ignorance. Tribal divisions and constant warfare plagued the people. Women were treated as objects to be bought and sold. Although the people of Arabia did inherit the legacy of the Prophet Abraham, whose monotheistic teachings had once been preached in the land, their pure monotheistic faith had been lost. Paganism had become the dominant religion and the foundation of the region's economy.
