Peer Tutoring Benefits

Peer tutoring has been found to be as beneficial for the young tutors and mentors as for the students being tutored and mentored. Lots of tweens with marginal social skills and less-than-stunning academic records show more maturity than adults could have predicted when they tutor a younger or less accomplished student. The educational benefits and boost to their self-esteem tend to be impressive — the key is to find a good match. See if your tween's teacher, a staff member at his after-school program, a YMCA counselor, or a day care center director will pair your child with a younger student and assign some specific duties, such as reading his young charge a story, helping him with homework, drilling him with flash cards, or even accompanying him to the playground and supervising him.
