Tips for More Effective Training

A triathlete in training has a lot to think about and many irons in the fire. Eliminating even small irritations can produce big benefits for the harried triathlete-to-be. Here are a few tips to ease the way:

  • Before you ride, always check your tire pressure. Low pressure causes extra wear and makes the ride harder.

  • Buy a tire change kit and learn how to use it.

  • Make a list of what you need for each workout and set out the requisite gear well in advance.

  • Carry an energy bar and sports drink on your rides. If you bonk on your bike ride, it's pretty close to a disaster.

  • Don't eat a heavy lunch on a day when you have a bike ride on the schedule. You don't need stomach issues in your workouts.

  • Check the weather the day of your ride to make sure you don't get miles away from home and have to return in a thunderstorm or worse.

  • Try to find group rides. They are more fun while increasing motivation.

  • Get adequate sleep.

  • Don't make it a practice to skip workouts, but if you get into one and find it's just not your day, bag it and plan to come back strong tomorrow. And forget about the bad workout. Negative energy saps you.
