Calabria is the southwestern-most region in Italy, the “toe of the boot.” Its western shore is defined by the Tyrrhenian Sea, while its southern shore lies against the Ionian Sea. There is less development here than in other coastal areas, which means you can enjoy views of pristine cliff sides far from the main throngs of tourists. There are also fantastic mountains lying inland, where skiing is a popular activity during the winter months. You can also find remnants of Greek rule here, including the town of Scilla, the mythological home of the sea monster Scylla from Homer's Odyssey.
