For Transportation in Italy

  • Aggregating Travel Websites

Any aggregating travel website, such as Expedia or Priceline, can show you prices and help you book airfare, hotels, rental cars, and — in some cases — cruise ships in Italy. Some sites even offer package deals. Beyond those basics — and in particular for traveling by rail — you will need to use dedicated resources that focus primarily on what's available in Italy.

  • AEROPORTO DI FIRENZE

This is the official website of the airport that services Florence. The site has an English version with timetables, transportation information, and everything else you might need before a flight.

  • AEROPORTO DI VENICE

This is the official website of Marco Polo Airport, which serves Venice. It includes an English version with all the information you might need about flight times, departure gates, delays, and the like. A special section talks about passengers arriving in Venice to board cruise ships, including procedures for skipping check-in lines at the airport after disembarking a ship for your return flight home.

  • CAREMAR

Caremar is a ferry company that operates out of the Campania region, including mainland ports in Anzio, Formia, Pozzuoli, Naples, and Sorrento. Ferries from the mainland ports run to nearby islands including Ischia, Ponza, and Capri. Not all destinations are available from each of the mainland ports, so check the website for more information.

This company's operations begin in the southern half of Italy, starting with Civitavecchia (Rome) on Italy's western coast and Ancona on Italy's eastern coast. No departures are available farther north, even from port cities such as Genoa and Venice. The website includes special offers for passenger transit as well as details about shipping and freight services.

This is a ferry company that offers service from the Italian mainland cities of Livorno and Piombino to the small islands of Gorgona, Capraia, and Elba. Service is also available from Porto S. Stefano, an island south of Elba, to the nearby island of Giglio. Note that at the time of this writing, information on the website was available only in Italian.

  • TRENITALIA

This is a website where you can buy train tickets for use exclusively within Italy's borders. There is also good information here about train stations big and small, if you are wondering what you can expect to find at your ultimate destination.
