Most visitors who travel to Italy's mid-section stick to well-known hotspots from Tuscany to Rome, but there is far more to see and do if you have some extra time and are willing to explore beyond the tour groups. Cathedrals, palaces, and museums abound, while port towns large and small on the Adriatic coast offer countless opportunities for sightseeing, ferry trips, and, of course, deliciously fresh seafood. Beach resorts are an option in this part of Italy, as are long hikes, bicycle rides, and winter snow skiing up and over the beautiful countryside hills and mountains.
