The Romans used to call this part of southwestern Italy Campania felix, which means “fertile countryside.” And it has been fertile indeed, producing centuries' worth of history, culture, and gastronomic delights. Naples, the birthplace of pizza, boasts a historic center that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The remains of Pompeii continue to enlighten the modern world about day-to-day life during the Roman Empire. The Amalfi Coast is chock-a-block with seaside resorts, as is the island of Capri, which has been a beloved vacation destination since around 500 B.C.
